Neothyone

Deichmann, 1941

3 species

Medium sized forms with numerous feet; skin thick packed with spicules. Tentacles 10 the 2 ventral smaller. Calcareous ring with posterior prolongations on the radials, in some species fairly short and soft, often inward curled, so that they escape notice. Single stone canal. Polian vesicles ventrally placed. Spicules an external layer of especially modified buttons, with spines either on the outer handle or transformed into reticulated baskets, in some cases lost with advancing age. An inner layer consisting of numerous knobbed buttons, mostly with 4 holes, knobs distinct, or almost obliterated. Feet with large end plate and numerous supporting tables with or without a spire. Introvert with varying amounts of tables or reduced buttons; tentacles with a varying number of heavy plates or rods, sometimes reduced with age. Rosettes seem to be present in certain species, at least in younger individuals; possibly they represent a variable character. (Deichmann, 1941)

Medium sized forms which have numerous feet (in radii as well as interradii); the skin is thick. There are 10 tentacles, the two ventral ones smaller. The calcareous ring has forked tails which in some species are short, soft, rolled up. In the upper skin there are plates which are changed into table-like deposits or to cup-like hollow deposits. Deeper in the skin there are plates with 4 perforations and with bumps. In the feet there are a large end plate and tables with or without top construction. In the introvert there are tables or plates. In the tentacles there are strong plates or rods. Rosettes appear to be lacking. (Panning, 1949)
