Parupeneus cyclostomus (Lacepède)
(Yellow-saddled Goatfish, Yellow Goatfish; Tiao [young],           Salmonete [adult])
SL: to 50 cm (photo: 22 cm SL, Orote Cliffs, 16 m)

This large goatfish inhabits a variety of habitats ranging from shallow lagoons and reef flats to seaward reefs to depths of over 45 m.  Unlike most goatfishes, it feeds during the day primarily on small fishes driven from their hiding places by its long, probing barbels.  It is generally encountered over coral, rock, or rubble bottoms and is frequently accompanied by the Bluefin Trevally Caranx melampygus (p. 45).  Small individuals are found singly or in small groups; large ones are generally solitary.  Occasionally uniformly bright yellow individuals are encountered.

INDO-PACIFIC: E. Africa to Mangareva, the Marquesas, and Hawaii, n. to the Ryukyus, s. to New Caledonia.
