KUHLIIDAE (FLAGTAILS)

Kuhlia mugil (Schneider)
(Flagtail; Atingyet)
SL: to 23 cm (photo: 9.4 cm SL, Saipan)

The Flagtail occurs in tightly packed schools along rocky shorelines, often under ledges or in caves, from immediately beneath breaking surf to a depth of a few meters.  At night Flagtails disperse to feed on free-swimming crustaceans.  Juveniles are common in tidepools and at the heads of surge channels, and they may enter brackish water.  Another species at Guam, the uniformly grey to brown K. rupestris, thrives in freshwater.

INDO-PACIFIC: Red Sea to Mangareva, n. to s. Japan, s. to Lord Howe.
