GERREIDAE (MOJARRAS)

Mojarras closely resemble slipmouths, but possess large, coarse scales. Their behavior and ecology are similar to that of slipmouths.

Gerres sp.
(Spotted Mojarra; Malakapas)
SL: to 29 cm (photo: 16 cm SL, Pago Bay)

Considerable confusion remains concerning the identity of the four species recorded from Guam.  The species shown occurs in clear, sandy-bottomed outer lagoons as well as in channels and turbid inshore waters.  It occurs singly or in schools and feeds on small benthic invertebrates.
