FISTULARIIDAE (CORNETFISHES)

Fistularia commersonii Rüppell
(Cornetfish, Flutemouth; Corneta, Badyak)
SL: to 107 cm (photo: 60 cm SL, Oahu, Hawaii, 9 m)

Cornetfishes differ from trumpetfishes by their somewhat vertically flattened, rather than laterally compressed, bodies and by the presence of a long, whiplike tail filament.  Cornetfishes occur in a variety of calm water habitats from shallow inner reef flats and lagoons to depths of 128 m or more on the outer reef slope.  They occur singly or in small schools of similar-sized individuals, and they seem to prefer relatively open, sandy areas of the reef. They feed on small fishes and occasionally invertebrates.

INDO-PAN-PACIFIC: Red Sea to Panama, n. to s. Japan and Hawaii, s. to Easter Is. and Lord Howe.
