Carangoides orthogrammus (Jordan & Gilbert)
(Yellow-spotted Trevally; Tarakito)
FL: to 44 cm (photo: 20 cm FL, Kosrae, 4 m)

This relatively small jack inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs from depths of 3 to over 50 m.  It occurs in pairs or in schools of up to a few dozen individuals, and it frequents sandy channels where it may be observed “rooting” in the sand for small sand-dwelling fishes and crustaceans.  It is a good foodfish usually taken by bottom fishing near shallow reefs.

INDO-PAN-PACIFIC: W. Indian Ocean to Mexico, n. to s. Japan and Hawaii, s. to Lord Howe and French Polynesia.
