Canthigaster valentini (Bleeker)
(Saddled Sharpnose Puffer; Butete)
SL: to 8 cm (photo: 6 cm SL, Tanguisson Pt., 7 m)

This is Guam’s second most common and ubiquitous species of Canthigaster, occurring in well-developed moats, lagoons, and outer reef areas from depths of 1 to at least 36 m.  Its ecology and behavior are similar to those of C. solandri.  It is occasionally accompanied by its monacanthid mimic Paraluteres prionurus (p. 131,C).  The remaining species of Canthigaster occurring at Guam tend to occupy a narrower range of habitats and feed on a narrower range of dietary items than do C. solandri and C. valentini.

INDO-PACIFIC: Red Sea to the Tuamotus, n. to s. Japan, s. to Lord Howe.
