(Black-spot Hogfish; Aaga)
SL: to 15 cm (photo: 12 cm SL, Facpi Pt., 20 m)

This moderately common species inhabits seaward reefs, particularly areas of rich coral growth along sandy channels, at depths of 9 to 22 m.  It is generally solitary and has been observed “cleaning” other fishes, although it feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates.  Adult males and females look similar, but juveniles appear quite different, possessing white blotches on a black body.

INDO-PACIFIC: Red Sea to the Societies and Line Is., n. to the Izus, s. to Lord Howe.
