Aphareus rutilans (Cuvier)
(Silvermouth, Lehi)
SL: to 70 cm; Wt: to 12 kg (photo: 40.4 cm SL, Guam)

The Lehi is strictly a deep-dwelling species, inhabiting outer reef slopes from depths of approximately 100 to 330 m.  Its deep-dwelling habits render it ciguatera-free, and it forms a valuable part of Guam’s bottomfish fishery.

INDO-PACIFIC: Red Sea to Mangareva and Hawaii, n. to the Ryukyus and the Bonins, s. to New Caledonia.
