The Staghorn Damsel is one of the most common fishes in rich coral areas of lagoons and bays.  It occurs in aggregations above branching corals from depths of 1 to 40 m.  Juveniles are often found among soft corals.  It feeds on zooplankton, fish eggs, and algae.
