SL: to 20 cm (photo: 13 cm SL, Orote Pt., 30 m)

This solitary species is moderately common on deep lagoon and seaward reefs from 10 to 40 m in areas of mixed coral, consolidated limestone, rubble, and sand, frequently at the base of ledges.  Juveniles are a bright yellow and occur in the same habitats as adults.

INDO-PACIFIC: Indian Ocean to the Societies and Marquesas, n. to s. Japan (young only), s. to New Caledonia.
