This is one of the most abundant surgeonfishes of shallow, exposed reefs from the outer reef flat to a depth of 6 m along the seaward reef.  It is usually found in small groups, consisting of a large territorial male and numerous females.  It browses on filamentous algae.  Small individuals are popular aquarium exports but require a large tank with clear, well-oxygenated water.

INDO-PACIFIC: E. Africa to Mangareva and the Marquesas, n. to s. Japan, s. to, New Caledonia; collected once in Hawaii, where it undoubtedly drifted during its larval stage.
