SYNODONTIDAE (LIZARDFISHES)

Lizardfishes are slender, bottom-dwelling carnivores with large mouths full of needlelike teeth.  Their well-camouflaged bodies and their habit of burying themselves in the sand render them nearly invisible as they lie waiting to ambush the small fishes on which they feed.  Eight or more species occur in the shallow waters of Guam.

Saurida gracilis (Quoy & Gaimard)
Synodus variegatus (Lacepède)
