Scorpionfishes are carnivorous bottom-dwellers that possess stout dorsal, anal, and pelvic fin spines that are venomous in most species.  This family encompasses a diverse array of forms ranging from the spectacular lionfishes to the leaflike Taeniontus triacanthus and the lumplike stonefish.  At least 19 species occur in the Marianas, most of which are small and inconspicious.
