LUTJANIDAE (SNAPPERS)

The snappers are a large and diverse group of robust-bodied, carnivorous fishes.  Most species possess relatively large mouths with stout canine teeth and bodies covered with relatively large, coarse scales.  At least 22 species occur in the Marianas.  Species of Aprion, Aphareus, Lutjanus, and Macolor inhabit shallow to moderately deep reefs; those of Etelis and Pristipomoides are confined to depths of 90 to 360 m or more and form the basis of a deep handline fishery.  Large individuals of some of the shallow-water species are frequently ciguatoxic.
