ACANTHURIDAE (SURGEONFISHES)

The surgeonfishes get their name from the sharp, knife-like blades on either side of the base of their tails.  Fishes in the genera Acanthurus, Ctenochaetus, Paracanthurus, and Zebrasoma have one blade on each side which folds forward into a groove; those in the genus Naso posses two fixed spines on each side.  Most surgeonfishes are herbivorous and a few feed on zooplankton.  Thirty-one species are known from Guam, 15 in the genus Acanthurus.  Those of the genus Naso are especially valued as foodfish.
